Good luck Barney and Sam
Anthony King has recently retired from the team after serving over 24 years, 'Barney' was the founder of the Beer coastguard web site, which after many hours work went live on 25 Jan 2001. We remember him coming to training on an old motor bike which kept breaking down, then he progressed on to cars and i mean a lot of cars every time we saw him it was a different vehicle, When we saw him last it was another car and he was talking about changing that one,
He was into ribs a few years ago and on one certain shout he called up on the radio and said he was on his way, when asked his location he said 12 miles south of Beer head, he never went anywhere slow and was soon searching close in along the shore.
One of the many call out's that come to mind is the one where he was at a formal dinner and got the call to start a search along the beach, when we arrived on scene there he was walking the beach in Tuxedo's not quite the right ppe.
Barney was a reliable team member with vast knowledge and experience which will be missed by the team, We wish him, Val and the family, well for the future.
Sam Anning will also be leaving the team in April after 2 years, Sam a local lad who after leaving the Police service returned to the area and brought his knowledge of policing and dealing with persons in difficulty to the team. Sam has always been a keen runner and continues to run everywhere, Morning and night he can be found running the coastpaths around Beer.
In his short time in the team he has fitted in extremely well and his knowledge of casualty workiing has helped the new and old in the team.
One of the first shouts he was involved with, was a search for a missing lady and we had to interview 2 other ladies from the retirement home, one of the ladies was quite taken to Sam and i think he was glad to get out of there.
i thank them for their efforts over the years and can say it has been a pleasure to work alongside them.
We will be getting together to wish them well with a beer or 3 in the not to distant future.
Our “patch” covers the coastal area from “Charton Bay” near the Devon / Dorset border in the east to “Ladram bay” in the west. We have 2 initial response teams that can react and be on scene within minutes. This area is part of the Portland district, managed by the Portland MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre). All emergency / distress calls by phone or VHF are routed to the MRCC and from there they callout the required resources, depending on the type and location of incident. We are alerted by pager, and contact the MRCC for details of the incident. If you are the person who calls 999 it is important you stay at that location until we have arrived so we can speak to you in person, and get as much information as possible. Never be afraid to call the emergency services if you think somebody is in trouble, delaying the call even a few minutes could make the difference between life and death. |
